The procedure for removing the cover from a smoke detector varies depending on the model of detector you have installed.  Generally, smoke detector covers snap into place and can be removed using a small flat-headed screwdriver.  If you are unsure about how remove a cover,  it is not recommended that you do it.  You could potentially cause damage to the detector and leave it inoperable.
